In the meantime I've read two major threads at ubuntuforums.org, one on the installation of the OS on the TC1100, and the other on an excellent piece of pen software. Both were well over 300 posts apiece and had a world of information and links. I've read at least a dozen other, shorter threads as well, and found good scripts and software everywhere.
The important software seems to be CellWriter (obvious) and EasyStroke. While development on both of them has slowed, there is a PPA from the writer of EasyStroke, and it includes an updated CellWriter, and some other stuff. Click on the author's name, and you'll see some other good PPAs. EasyStroke appears to be genius, and super-shiny.
Won't get into the weeds now, but there is a lot of good stuff out there for this slate. I'm going to need to make a plan for this, but I believe that every single piece of hardware can be enabled -- including the balky SD card. (I managed to find the elusive Gentoo post on how to enable it.)
I've also found a weird post, just pics really, on Cardbus adapters that may work with SDHC and CF cards. Good hints to go with the TabletPCBuzz commentary. I'm pretty sure I've seen the top card on eBay for a decent price. Seen some DigiGear cards on eBay too -- not cheap...but not dear, either, really. I'll probably go with spending the extra $10, as there is definite confirmation at TabletPCBuzz.
More expense: should I buy an OEM stylus with eraser? I think I'm going to want one eventually, and why not do it now? There's a great supplier on eBay at the moment, for only $49 with free shipping. I've also found a cheap, lightly-used leather portfolio case that I'm definitely bidding on. It'll look slick, and that's what's important.
It's snowing in Tenessee, where the shipper is, so delivery of my TC1100 will be delayed... waah.
